A COMPARISON OF SPERMATOZOA AND SPERMATIDS OF THREE SPECIES IN CATANTOPIDAE (ORTHOPTERA: ACRIDOIDEA)

Abstract:The spermatozoa and spermatids of three species of Patanga japonica (I. Boi. ), Stenocatantops mistshenkof Will. and Sinopndisma houshana Huang are described in this paper. Although those are located in the different genera of Catantopidae, their spermatozoa and spermatids share the common characteristics, such as in the spermatozoa the mitochondrial deriyatives own the longitudinal cristae, and the centriolar adjuncts belong to the multilaminar complex. In the spermatids there are two rows of microtubules surrounding the mitochondrial derivatives at stage 7 and 8. The differential characteristics in the spermatozoa occur in their total form lengthes, dimensional size and the number of cristae for the mitochondrial derivatives and the number of laminae of the centriolar adjuncts.After comparison, an important fact has been found that the spermatozoa of the abovementioned species are the same type as those of the other species sperm of Catantopidae,which were described by Baccetti in 1987.
