| Design and Development of InsectID, a Web System for Insect Taxonomy at Family Level in China |

| Abstract:This paper describes InsectID (at http://insectx.3322.org), the first Web-based system for insect taxonomy at family level in China, with focusing on introduction of design, structure and functions. The appropriate approaches for conversion and rebuilding of diagnostic keys, the creation of tree of taxonomy and the explanation of characteristics are discussed. The system has the following advantages: systematization in insect taxonomy, reliability in taxonomic data, simplicity in identification and ease of extension and revision, and it will be of great use for research and study of insect taxonomy, as well as for other biological taxonomy. |
