| Criticism on the Scientific Name for the Ground Pearls Damaging Peanut in Central China (Hemiptera: Coccoidea: Margarodidae) |

| Abstract:A species of ground pearls severely damaged peanuts in central China such as Henan, Hebei, Shandong and Shannxi province in past twenty years, but the scientific name of this ground pearl is uncertain. In the papers and works on this pest some authors used the scientific name Neomargarodes niger (Green, 1912) such as HOU Zhang-de et al (1986), the others used Neomargarodes sp. such as REN Ying-dang et al (2001). Based on the specimens examined and biology, we conclude that 1) the correct scientific name for ground pearl damaging peanut should be N. gossypii Yang (1979), not N. niger (Green, 1912); 2) N. gossypii is a valid species, not the synonym of N. N. chondrillae Arch.(1935). Besides, the morphology of adult male and female, first and second (cyst) nymphs, and male pupa are redescribed and illustrated. |
